This took place in January 2012, and was effectively a housewarming party for my new condo in SF. Music was played (although I didn't know how to DJ back then... unless you count plugging in an iPod as DJing). Things were consumed. Much fun was had.
In October of 2012 I decided to do the same thing again. I think the party lasted until 7am, if I recall correctly. By this point I had enough guests that every single room of my apartment ended up being used, including my closet. And I met someone that I ended up dating for almost 4 years, so that was nice.
October 2013. This was the first one that I hosted at an outside venue (Supperclub in SF, which has since closed). The vibe was... interesting. Several of my friends DJed on a dance floor surrounded by beds, while hired staff did acrobatics suspended from the ceiling and some guy named "3" crawled around in a cat suit.
Custom (paper) invitations went out for this one in October 2014, and more of my friends DJed at a more typical "club"-like space near SF's Design District (Venue 550). Dance floor, couches for lounging / making out, the whole shebang. I think this is when I started to feel inspired and think about learning to DJ myself. But it would take a couple more years before I finally jumped in.
By October 2015, I realized this would probably become an annual tradition and I started thinking of themes (or at least titles with a little alliteration, which y'all know I like). The original Airbnb venue for this one fell through but we ended up hanging out with a relatively small group of friends in a house in San Jose for an entire night. The basic ingredients: cool people, good music, and loving vibes -- were all we needed.
This one (July 2016) was momentous for a couple reasons. It coincided / served a dual purpose as my 30th birthday party, and it was also the very first event I ever DJed at. It's honestly still one of my favorite sets. I rented a big ol' house in Los Altos Hills with an outdoor pool; the police came by at one point to tell us to turn it down. People floated on pool floaties. We ate cake. It was awesome.
I jumped the gun on the yearly cadence this time and threw a shindig in April 2017 at a place in Sausalito called Harmonia. The indoor/outdoor space used to be a recording studio (where hits like Super Freak were recorded) and had been converted into a yoga studio artsy space. I DJed again, along with several of my friends. Food was catered, board games were played, coloring books were colored, and my designated cameraman got so high he only took one photo the entire day.
By October 2017, I guess I had an itch to scratch because I threw another Untz, with two parts / two locations. The first part was on a boat. Or a yacht, I guess. We cruised around the SF bay with a total of 114 people, plus a surly captain. Food was served, and I passed out some memorabilia (mainly stickers with that 🤪 face on it, you know the one). I tried to fit the mix to the mood. The second part was in a boutique hotel, overnight (Payne Mansion). The staff were real good sports about the mess we left behind... also, it served as the initial beta test of the "Bob Ross 'n' Chill" dome/art/space for the Happy Acidents Burning Man camp!
By November 2018 I was living in New York City! And had managed to separate myself from the mothership... (Google). So to celebrate, and welcome a new set of east coast friends, we had the basement lounge section of the Mondrian Park Ave hotel to ourselves for a night. Dance floor, Funktion One sound system, open bar, more DJs, more friends. What more could you want.
Yabadabadoo. Let's make history! The great summer comeback of 2021... I was thinking about what to name this one... I think I've settled on "Make Magical Moments". What does it mean? Let's talk about it :) And since I didn't want to choose between the east coast and the west coast, I'm doing both. Let's make some more memories <3
Let's crank it up to 11 :) Rented out a cozy warehouse venue in Williamsburg in July 2023 for this one which doubled as my 37th birthday party. I played this DJ set to warm the crowd up for our rock band (Accidental Contradiction) show that followed. Fun times were had, sandwiches were consumed, riffs were played, and solos were shredded. Until next time!
If you haven't heard, I have an official bet going with my friend Debarshi: I must DJ at a named stage at a festival with a total audience of 20K+ attendees before January 23, 2026. If I accomplish this, he will purchase a Tomorrowland Global Journey package for both of us to attend in summer 2026.
The 12th iteration of my “Untz” gathering will be hosted at an intimate private venue in Meatpacking (Manhattan) and serves three purposes: [1] create a special event in a historic space to get my party-planning juices flowing again, [2] debut the newest tracks from my discography which I've been working on over the past year, and [3] begin actively promoting my music and looking for larger DJ opportunities in order to win the aforementioned bet. d(@_@)b
